Along with being a Show Car, the DC Avanti is capable of being transformed into a production ready vehicle. DC Design hopes to follow the footsteps of the Italian carrozzerias such as Bertone, Ghia, Pininfarina and Stola. These Italians have always designed and engineered exquisite sports cars and have come out with limited number of cars for the public.

Dilip Chhabria, Founder, DC Design said, “We are extremely ecstatic to present the DC Avanti today and it is a manifestation of not just the burgeoning interest in high end sports cars but also as a calling card for our own capabilities which have now progressed from mere styling in the early days to full prototyping and bespoke one-off manufacturing. Every country which has written its name in the pantheon of automobile manufacturing has invariably distinguished itself with sports cars by its own nationals and I thought that India rightly needs to be in this exclusive club.”

"The Indian market for high end automobiles is on a steep uphill curve as witnessed year-on-year and our focus is at the top end of this rarefied niche. The design is completely our very own as is the engineering and also the production process. Type approval and on-road tests would follow soon and we intend to simultaneously set up an all new facility at Talegaon near Pune to build this vehicle," said Dilip.

"We intend to produce 300 units of the Avanti in 2013-2014 and if all goes well we could ramp up production to go into four figures per annum. Till now DC Design was noted for its design and customisation but then we added complete engineering and prototyping to our roster of services and working for the world's biggest names helped us understand and add to our expertise," added Dilip.

Further, he commented that "the Avanti is an ongoing culmination of all that we have learnt and we intend to give a sports car to a select new emerging breed of car buyers who value good taste without compromising on performance and who don't need to spend a fortune on making the adrenaline flow."

DC Avanti is expected to be equipped with a Ford EcoBoost 2.0-litre, four cylinder, DOHC, 16 valve engine. The engine unit has prominent features like turbocharging with direct injection and VVT (Variable Valve Timing). With these features, the engine will be capable of producing power and torque comparable to that of the bigger 3.0-litre engine.

The maximum power delivered by the engine of the supercar is going to be 240 bhp at 5500 rpm, while the torque will be 366 Nm at 3500 rpm. It is expected that the supercar will provide excellent fuel economy. The car will also not face any problems in being exported as the engine and its parts are Euro 4 and 5 compliant. It can be easily converted into the upcoming Euro 6 legislation after a few tweaks in the ‘engine mapping characteristics’.

DC Avanti will be light in weight, with a strong chassis that will make use of square, rectangular and round divisions to give power and firmness to the car. The suspension will be sports car type comprising of ‘unequal length wishbones’ all over and functioning together with ‘coil cover shock absorbers’. This supercar with appealing exteriors will be responsive, efficient and swift and will give excellent performance. It will be incorporated with a hydraulically assisted rack and a pinion steering gear.

The makers of DC Avanti have also incorporated major safety features. Bosch will provide its newest ABS brake system and SRS airbag technology in Avanti. International Experts in the field will take care of the drive quality and handling and the car will be completely assembled at the firm’s new production plant in Talegaon near Pune. The top speed of the car will electronically be restricted to 250 kmph and will be fitted with 19-inch tyres. The dimension of the front tyre is 255/35-19, whereas the rear is 295/30-19-sized rubber. Huge 330 mm diameter ventilated disc brakes accessorised with AP Racing callipers that come as OE fitment, provide control and smooth handling to the driver.

DC Avanti has compact and sleek outer dimensions that are not seen in any vehicle belonging to the Asian automobile category. The car has a combination of concave and convex exteriors to provide it an aerodynamic advantage.

DC Design’s dedicated and self-managed sales and service network have been setup in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad. Four more stores will probably be opened this year. The bookings for DC Avanti will commence as soon as the Auto Expo is over. A limited number of models will be manufactured; hence the bookings are subject to availability. The deliveries will start from the fourth quarter of 2013. DC Avanti is expected to carry a price tag of Rs. 30 lacs (ex-showroom).

THE WORLD IS GROWING MYOPIC !!!

We have unlearnt the skill to stare into the distance. By focusing solely on computer screens and sheets of paper, our eyes have lost the habit of staring into the horizon with a subsequent rise in the incidence of myopia in industrialized countries. It is the most common sight disorder in the United States (one and a half billion people in the world), marking an increase from 25 per cent in 1972 to 42 per cent in 2004.

But books, TV and computer screens are seemingly innocent this time. And neither are carrots and cranberries considered as a cure-all. The major enemies of myopia are the hours we spend outdoors. This was initially noticed a few years back, and a study presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology – currently underway in Orlando - confirms that every additional hour spent outdoors by children and adolescents during the week diminishes their likelihood of becoming myopic by 2%.

Hence, the beneficial effects of outdoor life are not limited to maintaining physical fitness, and metabolism. There are two feasible reasons that underpin the theory of outdoor life as protection against myopia. Firstly, natural light, which is far brighter than the light shed by electric bulbs, protects the shape of the ocular bulb by stimulating the production of dopamine in the retina (dopamine is a neurotransmitter that also limits growth of the ocular bulb); secondly, when we step outdoors, our eyes are naturally inclined to focus on the farthest objects, or even on the horizon, if we happen to be outside the city.

The study conducted by the British university combines the results of eight studies that have been carried out during the past four years on a total number of 10.400 children and adolescents. They were observed by measuring the quality of vision and lifestyle. While the association between healthy eyes and time spent outdoors was evident, no data was found to the prove that myopia is the direct consequence of hours spent on books, watching TV or, however, focusing on objects placed at an approximate distance of 30 cm.

Those who watch a lot of TV but compensate by spending several hours outdoors do not present a higher risk of myopia than those who scorn the remote control. Besides, the theory that reading and focusing on electronic screens “tires the eyes” causing ocular bulb deformation (a disorder that is determined by inherited genes to a good extent) has now been debunked. Moreover, sports activities seem to serve no purpose in maintaining long-distance vision if they are practiced in indoor gyms and sports facilities.

It is certainly no mere chance that studies conducted in Australia reported eagle-eyed children, regardless of genetic heritage. The country that prides in bright sunlight and wide horizons counts more hours of outdoor activities for its youth (14 a week) than Singapore (barely 3 hours a week), the capital city of lost dioptres.

What is laser eye surgery?

Local anaesthetic drops are placed in the eye being treated. A knife is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back to reveal the middle part of the cornea. Pulses from a laser vaporise a portion of this and the flap is replaced.

An eye patch is usually worn over the treated eye for 24 hours.

Both eyes can be treated on the same day, but your consultant should outline the risks. In order to reduce the risk of cross contamination should complications arise, each eye should be treated as separate procedure.

Why is it carried out?

Doctors use a laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea, the clear covering over the coloured iris, and the lens, which is just behind the pupil of the eye. People need to wear glasses for different reasons. Some people are said to be short-sighted or myopic. This is due to the cornea being too steeply curved or the eye longer than normal. Therefore, light rays fall in short of the retina - the area at the back of the eye that interprets the image - and results in blurred distance vision.

Other people are long-sighted or hyperopic because their cornea is too flat or the eye is too short. This means that the light rays focus too far beyond the retina. Others have a condition where the cornea is oval shaped rather than spherical, called astigmatism. This produces two different focal points which can blur images at all distances.

Laser surgery to reshape the cornea can help to correct these problems.

Risks of laser eye surgery

Complications occur in less than five per cent of cases, according to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Some people have a problem with dry eyes in the months after surgery and artificial tear supplements might be needed in the long term.

Many patients have experienced glare or halo effects when night driving, particularly just after treatment. This is more likely the higher the correction that has been made, but is rarely severe. In rare cases, excessive thinning of the eye wall can cause the shape of the eye to be unstable after treatment. Severe loss of vision is very unusual, but some patients could require corneal surgery or hard contact lenses to restore vision, it said.

Is it a common procedure?

Yes. Private treatment usually costs £1,000-£1,500 per eye and is available at some NHS hospitals. It is important to check the qualifications of the surgeon performing the operation as the Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommends that the doctor should be a fully trained ophthalmic surgeon and also have undertaken additional training in laser eye surgery. Some surgeons may also be NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons which means they will have completed at least 8 years of training and also be familiar with a wide range of eye diseases and problems.

Long-term impact of laser eye surgery

Most patients have a reasonably comfortable period after surgery and are back at work within a few days to a week. Depending on the vision correction attempted, driving may be unsafe for one to two weeks. Tinted glasses with ultraviolet protection are needed when out in the sun for the first three months.

Laser surgery will not be able to cure age-related presbyopia and the need for reading glasses that people often develop in their mid-40's. This is because presbyopia is not to do with a problem with the cornea. Instead, it occurs when the lens becoming less flexible with age.

However, Tatas disputed the reported attribution to its chairman, saying that the comments were taken out of context and factually incorrect.

“We would also like to clarify on stories in Indian media regarding Mr. Ambani’s home. The report is out of context and factually incorrect. Mr. Tata’s comments on wealth are in the larger context of the growing disparity in the society.
“There have been words, individuals and statements that have not been mentioned by Mr. Tata during the course of the interaction which are being attributed to him.

“We have already registered our protest with the concerned publication and will continue to pursue measures against the incorrect impressions being sought to be created,” a spokesperson of Tata Sons said in a statement.

The Modena-based luxury and sports car maker, in partnership with the Indian luxury retailer, the Shreyans Group, will open its first Indian showroom in Mumbai this year, while the second dealership will come up in New Delhi in early 2012.

With three models on offer in India - the Quattroporte, the GT and GranCabrio, Maserati’s entry represents pretty much the entire model range on offer across global markets. The Quattroporte saloon is priced in the range of Rs 1.23 to 1.43 crore, the GranTurismo from Rs 1.2 to 1.37 crore and the GranCabrio is priced at Rs 1.43 crore.

“We have brought our entire range of cars to feed the fast growing Indian luxury car market that doubled to around 700 units in 2010. We have the confidence to sell good on the back of robust demand for such luxury cars,” Maserati Asia Pacific MD Simone Niccolai told reporters in Delhi on Wednesday.

The super luxury car market, or cars costing above Rs 1 crore, is estimated at 350 cars per annum. It is expected to touch 500 units this year. “We have seen over 100 per cent growth in this segment in the past three years and the prospects for the next five years are stronger,” said Ashish Chordia, chairman of Shreyans Group.

Envisioning a franchise along the lines of Disney, with spin-offs in diverse genres that stray from the physics based puzzle design of the original, Vesterbacka elaborates, "Look at how Disney got started. Steamboat Willie created Mickey Mouse, then they added more characters. You can see the same pattern today, but everything is happening much, much faster. Other brands used to build recognition over the course of decades. We've done it in one year."

Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone !!!!

We have all been waiting for a PlayStation phone for a long time and it seems it will finally be a reality next year. The pictures have been leaked online several times and from what we can see it is an Android 2.3 based smartphone with a slider that reveals not a traditional QWERTY keypad but a proper gamepad like the one you can find on a PSP.

There is the standard D-Pad on the left, the four game controls on the right and what seems like touch based "analog sticks" in the middle with a button in the middle for the L3 and R3 function. If you look on the top (or on the right depending on how you hold the phone) you will also see the shoulder buttons. To be honest, whenever we imagined a PlayStation phone in our head it was very similar to what it looks like in the rumored pictures. We are really glad that although Sony Ericsson took their time with this phone they seem to have done a good job with the hardware.

Now as far as the games are concerned, they will be distributed online through an Android Market-like store on the phone. Users will also be able to play regular Android games that owners of other Android phones have access to. We are really looking forward to this one, and if Sony Ericsson gets this one right it is going to be absolutely awesome.

1. We evolve hotter.

A recent study revealed that women are getting better looking through evolution; meanwhile, men are staying the same. After following more than 2,000 people through four decades of life, the study showed that attractive women had 16 percent more children than average-looking chicks and that beautiful people are 36 percent more likely to have a daughter as their firstborn. All those gorgeous daughters mean more beautiful women than in past generations.

While surfing through the web for my today's post I saw this article on COSMOPOLITAN, found it interesting, so decided to share with you.Tons of recent studies proving that women have some amazing abilities that men lack. We have listed ten of our favorites.

2. We survive car accidents more often.

This is sad but true: Men are 77 percent more likely to die in a car accident than women, according to a study done byCarnegie Mellon University. Our boyfriends should be thanking us when we nag them to "Wear your seatbelt!"

3. We're better at seeking comfort.

A Mind survey of 2,000 people revealed that women are far more likely than men to talk through their problems. Fifty-three percent of women talk to their friends about what's stressing them out, as opposed to 29 percent of men.

4. We're more recession-proof.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80 percent of those who have lost their jobs since December 2007 have been men. Ouch. This could be because male-dominated fields have been hit the hardest, like manufacturing and finance. That really sucks…but hey, maybe it's time more men became nurses and educators.

5. We graduate college more often.

We already know that female enrollment is higher than male, but the Department of Education's statistics reveal that men are also less likely than women to graduate and get their bachelor's degrees. Men are also more likely to take longer than five years to complete their degree.

6. We eat healthier.

A survey of more than 14,000 people, conducted by the University of Minnesota, showed that women choose far healthier foods than men. While men are more likely to chow down on frozen pizza and red meat, women are piling fruits and veggies onto their plates. It all sounds pretty obvious, but we get so much grief for our chocolate addictions that we just had to point this one out!

7. We have stronger immune systems.

No wonder men act like such babies when they have a sniffle — women really do have stronger immune systems than men! If there are little battles going on in our bodies, women have a secret weapon: estrogen. A study done by McGill University indicated that estrogen gives women an edge when it comes to fighting off infections. That's because estrogen confronts a certain enzyme that often hinders the body's first line of defense against bacteria and viruses.

8. We live longer.

Among the world's population of those who are over 100 years old, 85 percent are women, according to the New England Centenarian Study. In general, women continue to live five to 10 years longer than men as well.

9. We're better managers, especially in this economy.

This one is a little controversial, but a slew of experts are confident that women make greater bosses because they are better listeners, mentors, problem solvers, and multitaskers than their male counterparts. In a recent Daily News article, management expert Jay Forte said, "It's a very service-oriented economy [right now], so you need employees to be motivated. Women are better connectors than men and more astute about knowing how to activate passion in their employees."

10. We invest better.

A study of 100,000 portfolios showed that women's investment returns outperform men's, 18 percent to 11 percent. This could be because women are typically more cautious with their investment decisions and think longer term.

Bhagat Singh(Punjabi: ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ بھگت سنگھ, IPA: [pə̀ɡət̪ sɪ́ŋɡ]) (27 September 1907^[2] – 23 March 1931) was an Indian freedom fighter, considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement. He is often referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh (the word shaheed means "martyr").
Born to a Jat^[3] Sikh family which had earlier been involved in revolutionary activities against the British Raj in India, Singh, as a teenager, had studied European revolutionary movements and was attracted to anarchism and communism.^[4] He became involved in numerous revolutionary organizations. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Hindustan Republican Association(HRA) and became one of its leaders, converting it to the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Singh gained support when he underwent a 64-day fast in jail, demanding equal rights for Indian and British political prisoners.He was hanged for shooting a police officer in response to the killing of veteran freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. I wasn’t at all surprised they have over 1 million fans on their Facebook fan page. Most people have no clue about style, quality or the evil doing of Luxottica!! Like Kleenex, Rayban is a name people associate with quality, as it is familiar to them. I challenge that notion. I think most of the world would recognize the following names.

I know some people will be offended at the very concept of x-Ray glasses but all perverted concepts aside I want to focus on the concept that technology has made it possible to see through clothing, even through several layers of cloth!

There are several types of X-Ray glasses on the market. Some are true X-Ray others are optical illusions. I want to talk about the range of types and how their technologies work. I find this technology fascinating for a lot of reasons. One type is used not just to see through clothing but to read secret messages painted on someone’s back leg etc.. Seen through the clothing!

You will, if you’ve never heard any of these concepts before be stunned how this technology became known “Accidentally” by a Sony handicam with night vision!

Apparently the night vision camera when used during the day could see through certain types of fabric (synthetic). When it was discovered people started to wonder how it worked and it turns out it’s the infrared beam that’s fed out and reflected back to the camera.

What you’re seeing in a night vision camera is inferred light reflected off of objects and fed back into the camera. Some synthetic clothing designed to “breathe” and allow the sun to come in (so you can get a “full” tan while wearing a bathing suit, a lot of bathing suits are like this) by design let light in or more related let UV rays in.

UV rays are a lot like Inferred rays in characteristics and this is what the camera sees (inferred). The clothing has enough tiny holes to let enough light in and bounce back out to the camera so you see the reflected inferred light, the clothes still opaque enough to hide the unmentionables to the naked eye but to the camera this is a different story.

When infrared light is let in it also bounces out and the camera picks it up. With the right filters (which have become more and more advanced) this light shows some pretty good definition, as other light is filtered out so it doesn’t over contrast the inferred beams coming back in. The filter isolates the light the camera picks up so you get a clearer picture. The X-Ray pictures (which you can see in the links below) aren’t HDTV quality but impressive enough to make these real x-Ray glasses!

The parts of the clothing that don’t allow the inferred beam into the skin to bounce it back out (clothing is non reflective but the skin is highly reflective) absorb the light and so the picture is not perfect, much like a lower resolution screen is pixilated because of less pixels of definition.

! Researchers have found wine can help patients with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Researchers found that a chemical found in red wine may help alleviate or prevent certain eye diseases.

Researchers have found that resveratrol, a compound present in red wine, grapes and other foods, inhibits the growth of new blood vessels that occur with eye diseases, particularly in older patients, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. It’s a process called angiogenesis.

Scientists from Washington University in St. Louis studied the effects of resveratrol in mice suffering from angiogenesis. They found that resveratrol not only prevented the formation of new blood vessels but also eradicated existing buildups.

Resveratrol has been found to decrease the effects of aging and fight cancer. Experts say resveratrol should be taken in pill form to have high enough concentrations of the compound to be beneficial.

The study appears in the July issue of the “American journal of pathology.”

If Apple wasn’t having enough problems trying to protect the privacy of their new 4th generation iPhones that were leaked recently, it seems that their prototype for the iPod Touch 2G has surfaced. Unfortunately for Apple, the Vietnamese aren't yet shy about leaking stuff [no pun intended], and no one’s sure of what's going on in Vietnam these days, because it's suddenly become a hot bed for industry leaks. Perhaps it's due to manufacturers expanding from China to Vietnam for cheap labour.
The Foxconn manufactured device also appears to be running the same base diagnostic utility. The Foxconn label appears to indicate a 64GB model ("64G") in addition to a 2 MP camera manufactured by Omnivision. The DVT-1 on the back makes it clear that this is a first model design verification test unit on the way to production testing. In other words, this might not be the final design that will be revealed whenever Apple chooses to officially announce it, or until the next leak anyway.
It seems cheap labor is costing Apple more than they had bargained for, with the recent leak of their refreshed MacBook and the 4th gen iPhone in Vietnam as well. Check out a hands-on video below, along with more images:

Facebook can be fairly easy to use as a tool to increase your brand awareness. Almost anyone can do it but it helps if you have some experience in networking. It may take time for you to see results, but if you are persistent, you can acquire a nice following and you will soon be able to jump start numerous successful groups.
Facebook is very simple and allows you to separate friends by groups. When you start a new group in three clicks you will be able to invite all of those friends most likely to be interested in what your new group is about. Below are seven great tips on how to market your company using a Facebook Group.
1) Increase Your Friends
It’s pretty hard to tell people about your company if you have no one to tell. Add at least 100 people you either know or would like to know. Try and find people that will be interested in the group(s) you may start on Facebook. It’s a waste of time to seek people out that don’t have similar interests. Stay focused on adding friends that will want to interact in conversations that your interested in. For example if you are trying to increase brand awareness for an organic foods company you will probably seek out people with healthy lifestyles and similar interests.
2) Starting a Group
When you start a group the first rule of thumb is the group needs to look full and alive. Upload pictures, videos and start topics and discuss. Get a few of your friends to help add to the discussion and post their own questions and content to keep the group going.
Ask a question here and there in the main body of the group and do not hesitate to link to articles on the bottom. The articles should link to informative websites in the industry or your own. If you manage to write good content on your blog, this is the ideal place to promote new posts.
3) Quality Content
Now that you have a Facebook group started you need to keep quality content and a strong message. People often join groups on Facebook but then rarely go back to interact with the group. They may read what’s going on but the reason why they don’t come back, is the lack of quality content. 4) Moderate Your Group

Have quality conversations. When a friend has some post you can get in on, then do not hesitate to shine with knowledge, input, and opinion or a questions. You cannot be shy. You need to let them realize that you are a qualified and knowledgeable person and people will be interested in joining your groups and checking out your site.
7) Be Social & Tell Everyone About Your Group(s)
Tell friends about your group, in fact tell anyone who might be interested. Some of the best ways are to invite people via Facebook and use Twitter to tell others about your group. LaCie's iamaKey USB Flash drive has been out for a while, and has received a warm enough reception that at CES last week LaCie announced two more models of their key-shaped USB drives: the CooKey and the WhizKey. The new USB drives are designed by the same firm who created the iamaKey, and come in a variety of sizes, starting at 4GB and going all the way up to 32GB.

As part of the launch, LaCie has announced that Wuala, LaCie's online data storage arm, will provide cloud-based online storage space with each LaCie USB drive purchased, including the USB keys. LaCie is offering users up to 4GB for two years with the purchase of every key-shaped USB drive, and up to 10GB for one year when you buy any other LaCie USB hard drive.

Wuala is a wholly owned subsidiary of LaCie. By offering up online storage with the purchase of each external storage device, LaCie is encouraging users to back up their data not just to an external volume, but to the cloud as well.

New Delhi: The seven-day 10th Auto Expo starts on January 5 and with about 2,100 participants from 30 countries it promises to be one of the largest automobile extravaganza in the globe.
Over 6 lakh visitors are expected to visit Auto Expo in the next one week and the organisers on their part are trying to control the crowds by increasing the fee to Rs 500 per entry.
But hike in prices is unlikely to deter the crowds because the extravaganza of auto display spread over 1.25 lakh sq meters is promising to be the largest in the world over.
The 10th Auto Expo promises to have something for everybody and for the aam aadmi (common person) it could be small concept cars by Honda, Volkswagen and Toyota, all promising to be delivered in the Indian market very soon.
While most manufacturers plan to launch their cars on the first day of the Auto Expo, there were others like Chevy, Audi and Renault who planned to launch their cars just a day before in order to get attention.
Those planning to see Dilip Chabaria's variant of the Tata Nano will be disappointed because it is not going to be displayed at the Auto Expo.
But there is a group of 50 vintage cars that will be displayed at the Auto Expo.
The 10th Auto Expo will witness 10 global launches on Tuesday. Topping the launches will be small and concept cars, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), along with super-bikes from Harley Davidson.
Some luxury sedans from the likes of Mercedes Benz, BMW India and Audi and a couple of hybrid cars, will be the other draws of the show.

Nokia sues Apple for patent infringement

Nokia has announced that it is suing Apple for patent infringement, over iPhone's use of GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN technology.
Now that's what we call gloves off.
Nokia says ten of its patents have been infringed, covering wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption. It further claims that every single iPhone model has infringed them.
"The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for," says Nokia's VP of legal & intellectual property Ilkka Rahnasto in a statement.
"Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation."
Apple has yet to respond to the lawsuit - we're assuming a statement will emerge later tonight. The complaint has been filed in the Federal District Court in Delaware.
Sound familiar? It's in Delaware that Nokia filed a complaint against Qualcomm back in August 2006, asking the Delaware Court of Chancery to "license intellectual property essential to GSM and UMTS technology standards on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms".
The two companies later settled their long-running litigation out of court. The new Apple lawsuit should make for equally compelling viewing for the industry.

She's Shinchan's mother. She rules the Nohara household with an iron fist that is regularly whacked against Shinchan and her husband's head. Shinchan's more common methods include doing the "Zou-san" in public, trying to pick up women on the street, and reminding her of how flat chested she is (however, she claims 89 cm).

Shinchan's father the hard working wage earner. His success as a businessman have alllowed his family to live a fairly comfortable middle-class life. Shin-chan's dog. It's small, white, and stupid, REAL stupid dog. Nene-can and the gang found him abandoned on the street and Shin-can took him home. If the dog had any intellegence, it would have run away a long time ago. Instead, it silently suffers the abuse that Shinchan dishes out day after day. Shiro isn't an extremely talented dog, but it does knows one trick which involves the command, Chinchin kai kai.

Nene-chan (Nene Sakurada)
Shin-chan's female classmate. She's a normal, maybe almost generic, kindergartener. When asked what she liked, she responded with Sailor Moon (of course, Shin-chan when asked the same question said "t-back oneesan" = "woman in a thong"). She'll happily spend her time "playing house" but her close proximity to Shin-chan makes her a target for his shenanigans. She seems to be able to shake them off fairly easily. However, it doesn't take a far stretch of the imagination to see her contact with Shin-chan resulting in a need for some serious psychotherapy a few years down the road.

Masao-kun
Masao-kun is one of Shin-chan's friends who can be easily identified by his monk-like, shaved head. He's extremely submissive and it doesn't take much to make him cry. He could be labelled a crybaby.

Boo-chan
In everyone's childhood memories, there's that one kid who was always a little bit "slower" than everyone else. Boo-chan is that kid. With what seems to be a perpetual cause of postnasal drip, he follows the other kids around like a miniature version of Frankenstein. He rarely speaks but once in a while, he will catch his friends off guard with a witty retort which they don't think him to be capable of.

Kawamura-kun
Tarzan boy. Kawamura-kun is a kid in Matsuzaka-sensei class who always wears a Cheetah-dot shirt. Kawamura-kun regularly plays a key role in Matsuzaka-sensei's plots to upstage Yoshinaga-sensei. He's a bully at heart and has the physical ability to back it up. However, he has one major weakness, Action Kamen. The mere mention of Action Kamen causes him to stop dead in his tracks, take the Action Kamen pose, and shout, "Action Kamen!" Shin-chan has taken advantage of this weakness more than once to Tarzan boy's chagrin.

Kazama-kun
Kazama-kun is the anti-Shichan in the story. If this was the fifties he would be considered a square. He is always well mannered and well groomed...the perfect target for Shichan. Shinchan and Kazama are like opposite forces of a magnet, Kazama the + and Shinchan the -. Because of this Shinchan is drawn to Kazama, resulting in a conflict of sorts, in which the negative (-) side most frequently wins.

(Ume) Matsuzaka-sensei and (Midori) Yoshinaga Sensei
Matsuzaka-sensei can be identified by her long black hair and the somewhat sinister aura about her. However, even though she won't admit it, she cares for Yoshinaga like a sister. Matsuzaka-sensei is 24 years old and she's quite aware of the fact that she isn't getting any younger. Because of this, one of her biggest priorities in life is entrapping some successful young man in marriage but Shin-chan always seems to be around at exactly the wrong time.. Yoshinaga is a bouncy and enthusiastic teacher. However, her playful disposition is no challenge for Shin-chan who happens to be in the class that she teaches. But to her credit, she hasn't killed him yet. Most normal people without Yoshinaga's resiliency would have made sure Shin-chan ended up in a shallow grave a long time ago. Yoshinaga-sensei has brown hair which is tied back with a ribbon. She also claims 89cm..

"Yakuza ja nai!" Enchiyou Sensei
Enchiyou-sensei is the principal at Shin-chan's kindergarten. He's a big, hulking man who always wears sunglasses and the same tacky suit, has a mustache and a scar on his face.. the kind of look that just shouts, "Japanese mobster." However, he seems to have both of his pinkies (Japanese mobster often lack them) and his suit jacket hides any possible body tattoos but it wouldn't be a far stretch of the imagination. In fact, he has been mistaken for a gangster on several different occasions. In reality, he's a gentle person and doesn't like it when Shin-chan teases him about looking like a gangster. Maybe in a future episode, he'll personally show Shin-chan how to make concrete shoes..

Microsoft Brands Office 2010, Releases Exchange Beta

Microsoft will release a beta of Exchange Server 2010 on Wednesday, the first product that enterprise customers will see from the next version of Office.
Microsoft is also going public with the official branding of its -- Office 2010. Until now Microsoft had been referring to it as Office 14, but the new name had been widely expected.
Exchange Server should be in full release by the end of the year, but the rest of the products in the suite won't be out until early 2010, said Julia White, director of the Exchange product management team.
Microsoft will release technical previews of other products in the suite, including Office 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010, in the third calendar quarter. A technical preview is tested by hundreds of thousands of users, while millions of people will have access to the Exchange 2010 beta, White said.
Another of the Office System products, Office Communications Server (OCS),is on a different schedule. The latest version, OCS R2, was released only in February, and Microsoft has not discussed plans yet for the next big upgrade.
Microsoft will begin the process of upgrading its hosted version of Exchange, Exchange Online, at the same time it ships the Exchange 2010 on-premise product. Exchange Online customers will have the ability to determine when their users are upgraded to the new Exchange 2010 capabilities in Exchange Online, starting in the first half of 2010.
Now that Microsoft offers Exchange as both a service and an on-premise product, it is beginning to align the features of the two offerings more closely, White said. When the company makes architectural decisions about the server product, it thinks about the service as well, she said. "We're thinking about them in a unified way."
It made it easy in Exchange 2010 to automatically configure access for certain employee roles, such as a compliance officer or human-resources manager, White said. "You can set it up [for people] to just have access to the mail boxes they need to search, and can turn that access on and off very quickly," she said.
In Exchange 2007, IT pros needed "an 80-page white paper" to do something similar, she said.

Microsoft Now Holds 10,000 Patents

Microsoft is marking on Tuesday the recent awarding of its 10,000 US patent, granted for its surface computing technology.

U.S. Patent No. 7,479,950 outlines how users can place objects, ranging from cell phones to fingers, on the surface computer's table-like display and the computer will identify the objects and track their position, orientation, and motion, Microsoft said. This allows objects to be associated with data or media, such as a collection of music or photos.

Microsoft was granted 2,000 patents in 2008, ranking it fourth among companies receiving US patents, Microsoft said. The company spends about US$8 billion a year on research and development.

"Most technology companies, Microsoft included, have been increasing their emphasis on IP in recent years, trying to derive greater business value from their intellectual assets," said Bart Eppenauer, chief patent counsel for Microsoft, in a statement released by the company.<<

Microsoft has unveiled the latest version of its Windows operating system.

It promised that it will deliver a better experience for users when it arrives sometime late next year.

Windows 7 follows Vista, which Microsoft claims has been a success, but which has been subject to fierce criticism from a number of users.

The system was demonstrated at the company's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles.

Senior vice-president Steven Sinofsky described it as an "exciting new version of Windows" and claimed it would deliver a more personalised experience.

The company discussed Windows 7 on Thursday at a conference for its field sales force in Orlando, Fla., according to sources close to the company.

While the company provided few details, Windows 7, the next client version of the operating system, will be among the steps taken by Microsoft to establish a more predictable release schedule, according to sources. The company plans a more "iterative" process of information disclosure to business customers and partners, sources said.

Windows Vista, the oft-delayed most recent release of Windows, shipped to businesses in November and to consumers in January after more than five years of development. Vista's gestation period was marked by shifting product details as internal priorities changed and problems arose with development.

Like Vista, Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.

Next up on Microsoft's agenda is Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, which is expected before year's end.

The discussion of Windows' future isn't surprising, given that Microsoft has been criticized by business customers for delays related to Vista. Many business customers pay for Microsoft's software under a license agreement called Software Assurance.

Windows 7 was previously known by the code name Vienna. A Microsoft representative confirmed that Windows 7 is the internal code name for the next client release of Windows. The details were released "as part of our ongoing outreach to enterprise customers and partners, Microsoft has begun sharing plans for how they will continue to deliver value to businesses in the future?Software Assurance customers in particular," a representative said in a statement via e-mail.

OQO Model 02 Ultra Personal Computer

In October of 1993, I bought what was then my ideal computer. It fit in my pocket, had a full QWERTY keyboard with dedicated numeric keypad, had lots of built-in apps, ran all my DOS programs with ease, had a gorgeous monochrome LCD screen and ran for 20 hours on two AA batteries. It was the HP 200LX. For years I used this machine for PIM storage, keeping grades for my students, writing a diary and keeping my important text documents on hand for easy reference. I moved to a new Windows-based grading program a year and a half ago, but I had used my 200LX for all that time. It still sits in my gadget cabinet, one gadget that will never see the light of Ebay.

Since then, I have been on a quest to find the perfect replacement for my 200LX. It would preferably have a color screen, have the same form factor and easy-to-use chiclet keyboard. I found the IBM PC110 (imported from T-Zone in Japan), a 486 handheld that was not terribly stable. It was the first machine I ever had with a CF slot! I returned it after crash after crash. I embraced the Psion 5 and 5mx, but there were always connection issues with my desktop computers. I had several models of the Jornada clamshell series, the 660, 680 and 720, but all were larger than I really wanted, had a low screen resolution and the built-in web browser was worse than useless. I realized that only a fully Windows compatible system would serve. Why not the Zaurus? Because I don't know Linux and I want a machine that will work out of the box, not one I have to tinker with to get to work. Then came the Flipstart, but after years as vaporware, I gave up on it. The Nokia 770 was nice, but it was slow and quite limited.
Then came the OQO Model 01+.
It was the ideal size, ran XP and seemed loaded enough to do the job. I bought it from Ebay and marveled at the engineering of the tiny device. My joy was short-lived, however. The screen was difficult to see, the battery life was dismal, the keyboard was unusable, the screen was mushy to the touch and not terribly accurate with the digital pen. I sold it on Ebay and the buyer apparently still enjoys its use today.
Then came January 7th, 2007.
This is the day when I opened up Engadget.com and saw that OQO had unveiled a new model at CES. There were video clips of this new wonder, and it took me days to mop the drool off my keyboard. They were available for preorder right away, and I ordered one, despite the promised 8-12 week wait time to receive it. I ordered it, and waited.
I called OQO to ask them when I would be billed for the unit, and they told me right away. I had gone with the Bill Me Later option, so I could pay off the not-inconsiderable bill over the course of a year. I promptly canceled my order on the basis of this information. No point in paying for a few months for a unit I didn't even have yet! It turned out that this information was in error, and it was February 26th before I found out differently,. I placed a new order for the Best model (1 GB RAM, 60 GB 4200 RPM hard drive, XP Pro, no EVDO module) with the Road Warrior accessory pack (mesh cable bag, AC adapter, car/plane adapter, Stronghold metal case, extended battery, Bluetooth folding keyboard, portable USB mouse, which has still not shipped as of the time of this review), a digital pen, a spare pack of screen protectors and some spare mouse nubs. The unit shipped out after only 8 weeks and took five days to reach me due to a customs problem (the units ship from Singapore) and a weekend. I saw the Fedex truck pulling up to where I work and I ran downstairs to the main office faster than an Olympic sprinter. You should have seen the grin that cracked my face from side to side as I carried the tiny, unassuming box back up to my classroom.
The box is a small one, black, sealed in plastic. Breaking the plastic reveals a lid that opens, disclosing the slick black OQO unit, protected in a swaddling of plastic. Lift up this top compartment, and you see the middle boxlet, which contains the AC adapter, power cable and a dongle that attaches to the docking port on the bottom of the OQO, and provides Ethernet, VGA and power. This dongle is really neat, because it swivels on its cable to adjust to any workable angle you want without putting undue stress on the cable connection to the dongle. It's a very intelligent design, and just one example of the fine engineering that went into this package.

Underneath the accessory boxlet is the documentation boxlet. This has the sparse quick-start guide with a restore DVD safely ensconced in the rear of the booklet, a Windows XP certificate of authenticity and a spare mouse nubbin in a little ziplock bag.

Now, to what you have all been waiting for, the tiny little marvel of cutting-edge design and engineering known as the OQO Model 02. It is a small, black brick, measuring 5.6" long (curving outwards for the last third of an inch on both sides), 3.3" wide and 1" thick with the standard battery. The extended battery adds �" to the thickness. This is exactly the same as the HP 200LX, but half an inch SHORTER! It fits perfectly into the leather case that held my 200LX for 14 years. It weighs one pound, but it feels deceptively heavy for its size.

The screen bezel is made of black plastic (with metal on the back), and there is no more mush factor with the screen itself. The screen is solid. Not being a touch-screen, they really made it durable this time. The 02 comes with a screen protector installed. I had to squeeze one bubble out, and it has not returned. The protector covers the screen all the way out to the edge of the bezel, including the OQO logo on the lower left, the light sensor on the upper right and the capacitive touch scrollers on the lower right. It smudges easily, but it appears to be quite durable.

On the bottom of the unit, there is an HDMI port on the right, so you can connect it directly to an HDTV! Not MY HDTV, though. In their infinite wisdom, Samsung did not incorporate support for HD HDMI into the 24" model I bought, despite the HDMI port.

There is also a vent for the fan, the power/docking port and a single USB 2.0 port. It will drive a USB hub, so no worries there.

The right side is bare, except for a vent. Since I did not opt for the EVDO WWAN module (I have a Treo 700p with EVDO and PDANet), a solid piece of black plastic covers where the module and pull-out antenna would have been. It would have been nice for them to engineer a slot for storing the optional pen where the antenna would have gone, but they didn't. If you get the unit with XP Tablet installed, you get a digital pen for free. But there is nowhere on the unit to stow it. This is one of only a few design flaws I found with this unit. There is also a metal wire that appears to be a guide for the sliding screen on the top side of the unit, there is an identical one on the other side. It would be interesting to find out if these wires double as the WiFi and Bluetooth antennas. In the Model 01+, the antennas stuck out to either side of the unit. If these are doubling as antennas, they are totally out of the way when holding the unit in two hands. In the WWAN units, there is an antenna that comes out of this side and then can be swiveled into an upright position for increased reception in poor coverage areas.

The top of the unit has one vent. This is one well-ventilated unit, and it runs a LOT cooler than the 01+ did. It still gets warm, and the fan can get pretty loud, but at least you can't fry eggs on this one.

The left side is vent-free. It has the battery release button, a Kensington lock slot and the power button. Like the 01+, the power button glows white, and pulses white when the unit is in standby mode. I appreciate the Kensington lock slot, but I never let this leave my sight or side. I work in a high school, and this thing would disappear faster than a feather in a tornado if I turned my back on it for a second.

Now, about all those vents... There is a fan inside this unit that keeps the innards cool. You can adjust the fan to be louder (higher CPU performance) or quieter (slower CPU performance). I keep it in the middle, and after I installed all of my apps, I hardly ever hear the fan. It can get quite loud, but unless you are in a dead quiet room, you would likely not notice the noise. It sounds like a small hair dryer when it really gets going. It does do the job, though. While the unit can get warm with use, it is not the scorching brick of death that the 01+ was. The AC adapter also stays relatively cool. The 01+ adapter had a tendency to get hot, so this is a nice improvement.

The battery attaches to the bottom of the unit. It is the entire bottom of the unit, and is released by the battery release button on the left side of the 02. There is a built-in battery gauge, a series of four rectangular white LEDs, While not as elegant as the tiny LED's on the 01+'s battery, it gets the job done. When recharging, the lights go on, cycling up through the number of LED's corresponding to the current charge. When the battery is full, it shows four LED's, and then it shuts off. When in use, pushing the long rectangular button that houses the LED's lights them up so you can see how much power is left. I love this feature on my Sony Handycam's battery, and I don't love it any less on the OQO. The standard battery is good for about 2.5 hours of real-world use, some browsing with Wifi on, keyboard backlight on, work in productivity apps. I recommend letting the battery charge overnight the first day you get it for optimum results. The extended battery should get you about five hours of continuous use, on average, and adds only 1/4" to the thickness of the Model 02. As my extended battery has not yet arrived, I cannot give you real-world results on this.

OK, now for the real fun. Slide open that screen. Push upwards with your thumbs on either side on the bottom. Feel the initial resistance and then it slides upwards smoothly and clicks into position. With the 01+, the screen would sometimes threaten to slide closed. No problem with that here. When it's up, it stays up. There is no wiggle in the screen when the unit is shaken.

Oooh, look! A keyboard! And not a silly membrane job, but a real keyboard with real individual keys! They press easily, as they have slightly rounded tops, and they have tactile feedback!!! Just like the keyboard on my HP200LX, even a similar feel. The keys are a little wider top to bottom, and are closer together than on the 200LX, but look, there's the dedicated numeric keypad! The layout is opposite of what you would find on a calculator or a desktop keyboard's keypad, which is, in my opinion, design flaw number two. The number keys double as function keys F1-F12 with the help of the Fn button. There are -/_ and =/+ keys flanking the 0 key.

The mouse nubbin lies between the QWERTY pad and the numeric pad. Above it is the Backspace/Delete key and below it is the ENTER/Insert key. This keyboard will take a little getting used to, but it doesn't take long! The mouse is very responsive and its action is tight. The cursor can tend to wander after you let the nubbin go, but no more than any other notebook with this style of mouse control. Just let the cursor slide until it's done and happy, and then it's no problem! The mouse buttons are on the left side and are large and the whole mouse control feels natural and easy.

There are no Windows or Menu keys on this keyboard, but there are several specialty keys that help to make up for it. Fn+DESK takes the place of Windows + D in bringing up the desktop. While in DESK mode, there is a green rectangle in the upper right corner of the screen. Clicking on this will restore your open windows.

Fn+KEY brings up the Ctrl-Alt-Del Task Manager! Fn+((i)) brings up the OQO Wireless Control Panel. From here, you can power on or off your WiFi (a.b and g), Bluetooth or WWAN (if installed). You can also hit the little airplane icon to put the unit into flight mode!

Sony Ericsson is out with its latest Cyber Shot, the C902. The slide-out lens cover of the C902 opens to reveal its 5 mega pixels camera with 16x zoom, auto-focus, and face detection. There are eight illuminated camera touch-keys allowing users to select between camera modes, photo flash, face detection, auto-focus, etc, without having to remove their fingers from the shutter button. The photo features of the new Cyber Shot include photo flash for low-light conditions, BestPic for clicking nine photos in quick succession, x-pict story for creating a slide-show, and so on. Users can add music and transitions to the photos to automatically create multimedia slide-shows.
Cyber Shot C902 is available in two color options -- Swift Black and Luscious Red. It is priced at Rs 20,995.

Sure, there's plenty of far fetched concept devices from big players like Nokia, but it's nice to see that folks without millions of dollars in research funding can also come up with equally unrealistic devices, as evidenced by this so-called "Scroll" contraption created by 13 Tech Design. What's more, this one doesn't get by on looks alone, with it packing a touchscreen-based cellphone, a 10 megapixel camera and 1080p camcorder, various media-playing features, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, and a full-fledged computer that runs on Vista or XP. That's right, it seems that even fantasyland gadgets need to fall back on XP.

Nokia pushes '4G wireless' plans

Nokia is pushing Long Term Evolution as the 3G successor

Nokia, the world's largest handset manufacturer, has signed up Sony Ericsson, NEC and Alacatel-Lucent to its plans for a 4G wireless system.
The companies have formed a licensing framework for their patents for the emerging mobile standard, called Long Term Evolution (LTE).
The deal will add momentum to LTE, which is seen as a direct competitor to Wimax, which is being pushed by Intel.
The first LTE networks are being rolled out in the US and China.
LTE is a faster and more long distance wireless system compared to 3G.
Nokia and its partners believe LTE is the logical evolution of 3G systems and are selling it as a solution for mobile phones, as well as laptops and even fixed broadband connections, replacing wi-fi.
The framework deal also involves NextWave Wireless and Nokia Siemens Networks.
The companies have committed to keeping royalty payments for use of essential LTE patents low to give the technology the best chance of success.
Intel believes Wimax will be the future of wireless communications.
In a recent interview with BBC News chief executive Paul Otellini said in a year's time 10 million people would be using Wimax, rising to "hundreds of millions two years after that".
"We see Wimax as the most cost-effective way to deliver high-bandwidth wireless broadband," he said.
A handful of Wimax-enabled phones have been produced so far.
Nokia itself has released a Wimax-enabled internet tablet but pulled out of a partnership with Intel to look at putting 3G connections onto laptops alongside Wimax.

Earlier this week the front page of the Austin Chronicle featured a picture of the band the Guitar Zeros - a group of musicians who perform using hacked versions of the Guitar Hero video game controller.
It's an extreme example of how popular the game and it's guitar style interface have become.
"It's pretty amazing we took something that was real and made it fake and they took something fake and made it real" said Kai Huang, CEO of RedOctane who created the game.
But while games like Guitar Hero and the Nintendo Wii are exploring new kinds of kinetic interface, in our work lives most of us are stuck with the Qwerty keyboard and the computer mouse: inventions that date back 134 years and 24 years respectively.
At SXSW in Austin Texas, what comes next has been a hot topic of conversation across a range of expert panels.
For Huang simpler interfaces like Guitar Hero point the way to the future.

Minority Report has inspired many designs, including the Cynergy controller

Guitar Hero "allows people to jump from point a to point b, it skips all of those hard years, the 10,000 hours it would take someone to learn a real instrument.. and I think that can be applied to just about everything," he told the BBC.
Outside the realm of games, Microsoft's Surface is another alternative to keyboard and mouse beginning to find a place in the consumer world.

Kristin Alexander, head of research and planning for Microsoft Surface, says interfaces will, in the longer term, move beyond table top screens to other spaces.

Guitar Hero has been praised for its innovative interfaces

"That's why we called it Surface and not table.", she said, adding that the long term vision was both horizontal and vertical. Although she stressed Microsoft remained very committed to the mouse.
If that's the plan, then Microsoft may have a bit of catching up to do, Rick Barraza of Cynergy Systems was showcasing a home made "Minority Report" style gesture-interface made of a Nintendo Wii controller, a gutted computer mouse, and a pair of baseball gloves dotted with infra-red LED's, "the whole things is maybe around $150" said Barraza.
In spite of the homebrew feel, the results were impressive.
"It was unabashedly inspired by Minority Report... very much like Microsoft Surface without the surface."
Currently, the Surface costs several thousand dollars.

But Minority Report may not be the best answer.

The Make it So: Learning from Sci-Fi Interfaces panel at SXSW looked at how science fiction might influence the future of design.
Panellist Nathan Shedroff who teaches an MBA in design said: "If you talk to the people who worked on the film they had to keep taking breaks because Tom Cruise would get tired."
Barrazza and Shedroff might disagree about the physical demands of gesture style interfaces, no such problems face the Emotiv system which uses electrical activity in the brain to control computer systems; it was seen as a promising development by several speakers.
"In 20 to 40 years that technology is going to advance," said Huang.
But while the world waits for brain powered computing there was general agreement that in many ways the key to easily accessible computing wasn't necessarily only a matter of greater sophistication.
"The simple thing is to add a few more buttons. The really difficult thing is to simplify that down," Huang told the conference.
Fans of the Guitar Zero's would presumably agree.

Web developers have gathered in Las Vegas for Microsoft's annual Mix conference. Blogger and journalist Ewan Spence gives an overview of the talking points from the event.
"We are placing the internet at the centre of our strategy," was the key message that Ray Ozzie, chief technology officer of Microsoft, got over to the attendees at the company's Mix08 conference in Las Vegas this week.
The annual "72 hour conversation" is where the Redmond based company sets out its vision and strategy for the next year.
The big picture driving Microsoft, explained Ozzie, was one of the internet and marketing shaping changes over every product line.
These changes should ensure that there is sufficient space for advertising to be presented to an increasing user base, both in the products and on community and content sites; incidentally this need for advertising space is one reason why Microsoft has shown an interest in Yahoo.
"The Web is acting as a hub for more devices every day," says Ozzie
Typical view
Previously the typical view of the internet was something that a PC would connect to. Now internet aware devices are becoming more commonplace. From 3G enabled smart phones, to digital music players and gaming machines; more consumer electronics are going online.
As people carry more of these devices, they are building their own "personal internet", and Microsoft hope to make the experience of working in this net as seamless as possible.
People should be able to move their information, media and even full programs between these devices without having to worry about if something will or will not work.

This web of devices can be viewed as many small pieces, loosely joined. Developers want to spend more time writing one program that can run on many of these devices, rather than have their creativity suppressed because they must spend time testing compatibility across the range of products.
Microsoft's Silverlight technology is where a lot of effort to solve this problem will be focused on.
This is a set of tools that plugs into your web browser and allows websites to display rich media content and applications - in a similar fashion to Adobe's Flash system.
With a heavy focus on media, especially video, Silverlight can deliver very complicated and detailed web pages.
Multi-view television
Demonstrations at Mix08 included multi-view television where viewers can decide on camera angles and what to watch, and AOL's updated web email client that delivers an experience comparable to a mail client running on your own computer.
The first version of the technology has seen a solid uptake, with 1.5 million copies of the plug-in downloaded every day.
Already available for Windows PC's, Macs and Linux, Microsoft also reiterated the announcement that Nokia would make Silverlight available for the majority of their handsets and internet tablets.

Probably the key release of Mix08 was the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), the latest web browser from Microsoft.
In recent years alternate browsers such as Apple's Safari and Mozilla's Firefox have become increasingly popular, in part due to following internet standards in how pages are displayed - subtle differences between browsers can sometimes make pages look different on IE than in Firefox, for example.
This is no longer the case - the part of IE8 that displays a page has been completely re-written to be standards compliant, much like Safari and Firefox.
Developers will be able to spend much less time making a site work in each browser, and can concentrate on delivering a much better experience.
At a stroke, the single biggest complaint from web developers about Microsoft's browsers have been answered, and the initial reaction from the developers towards the sentiment is positive, albeit with the knowledge that this brings the browser to the same level as others.
Where IE8 is going to prove a success is in connecting the user to information on websites as they journey around the internet.

Silverlight has been dubbed a "flash killer"

Microsoft have made it easy for websites that provide services to be used from any other website. For example, if you highlight a street address in IE8, the right click menu will allow you to bring up the location on through the Live Maps service. Find an interesting item you're looking to buy? Right click and be taken directly to the Ebay search results for that product.
Another new element can then be used; Web Slices allow you to subscribe to part of a page and be alerted when the information changes.
Such as when you find the perfect item on Ebay you can use a web slice to subscribe to just that one item; which is then easily followed from the IE8 toolbar.
What Microsoft has chosen to show at Mix08 are not finished products, but the first wave of new products that will become generally available over the next six months. If they continue to innovate and keep both the user experience and the requirements of developers in mind, then their product portfolio is going to be strong and compelling.
The key will be for Microsoft to continue to operate in the currently turbulent business environment, while giving their product teams the confidence to ignore the distractions, such as proposed mergers with Yahoo, and continue to develop the software.

But a new initiative by National Public Radio, technology firm Harris Corporation and Towson University aims to change that.

The consortium is developing radio for deaf people, a counter-intuitive sounding system that translates speech radio into text in real time.

At the moment the voice to text conversion has to be done by typists but could one day be automatic.

The information is then broadcast alongside the voice transmission and displayed on a screen on the radio.

The consortium will transmit the first live broadcast at CES using a prototype radio that has a screen large enough to display big swathes of text.

They expect the first commercial radios to be available towards the end of this year

The lightweight and small Eee PC from Asus has been one of the tech hits of the last 12 months and more than 350,000 machines have been sold in the past thee months.

It has won admirers for its four gigabyte solid state drive, small form factor and attractive price. It runs the Linux operating system, but can also run Windows XP.

The company has now announced new models - 7, 8 and 9 inch - but crucially, they will have Wimax built in - giving it increased wireless capabilities.

In truth, there are not that many Wimax-enabled areas anywhere in the world, although 70 different countries are running pilots.

But Intel is betting heavily on Wimax as the winning next generation wireless network and so Asus has taken the plunge - at least, in North America.

The entry level Eee with Wimax will cost about $999, according to reports, though Asus has so far remained tight-lipped on exact prices

No longer content with simply providing directions from point to point, manufacturers are starting to pack more and more features into in-car GPS devices.

Those on show at CES include the ability to download movie times, find a parking spot and avoid the traffic.

One company, Dash Navigation, has launched a unit called the Dash Express which aims to harness the power of its community to avoid traffic jams.

The unit has the ability to receive real-time traffic data from different sources, including units belonging to other owners.

In effect, each unit works as a traffic sensor sending a user's speed and location over a permanent internet connection.

Back at Dash HQ, the company calculates up-to-the-minute traffic conditions and suggests alternative routes if there is a traffic snarl ahead.

In theory, the device should get better as more Dash users hit the roads.

The device has been developed in collaboration with Yahoo and allows the users to conduct web searches for locations or even the cheapest fuel.

The US service costs from $10 a month.

To share photos quickly and easily a wireless camera is a must.

But for those people who do not want to invest in a new device help is at hand.

A company called Eye-Fi have developed a series of memory cards with built in wi-fi that automatically convert your camera into a wireless device.

The 2GB cards automatically connect to a wi-fi network and can dump photos to a folder on a PC or upload them to social networks or photo-sharing sites.

The firm has done deals with the likes of Flickr, Photobucket and Facebook.

The associated software takes care of log-ins and passwords and can even automatically resize pictures if the site requires it.

To send them to a computer the PC must be turned on and running the companies photo managing software.

Currently they are only available in the US but should be on sale in Europe later this year.

Developers will have wider distribution for their widgets
Google has launched a system that will allow developers to create applications for a variety of social networks.
Developers currently have to customise their designs for a particular site with many partnering with the hugely popular Facebook.

Google's OpenSocial system will allow a wider distribution for tools like Facebook's music recommendation service iLike and its Top Friends application.

It has long been reported that Google has big ambitions in social networking.

Last week it missed out on the chance to buy a stake in Facebook with the founders choosing instead to do a deal with Microsoft.

"Facebook-fear"

Google said that around a dozen social network partners had signed up to the system, including business site LinkedIn, Friendster and Google's own social network Orkut.

Developers already onboard include Flixster, iLike and RockYou.

Unlike Facebook, OpenSocial allows developers to write in normal javascript and html with only minor adjustments needed for the code to work on its platform.

According to blog TechCrunch the plan is likely to be a big hit with developers as well as Facebook's rivals.

"Developers have been complaining non stop about the costs of learning yet another markup language for every new social network platform, and taking developer time in creating and maintaining the code," wrote TechCrunch's Michael Arrington.

He is impressed by the number of social networks that have signed up so far.

"Facebook-fear has clearly driven good partners to side with Google," he wrote.

Technology writer Om Malik observed: "OpenSocial attacks Facebook where it is the weakest (and the strongest): its quintessential closed nature."

Leopard upgrade hits Mac firewall

Upgrading to the latest version of Apple's operating system, might make a Mac less secure, say experts.
A test of Leopard revealed that installing it led to the firewall on a Mac being turned off and its default setting changed to leave it disabled.

Heise Security, who conducted the tests, said the failings meant users could not "rely" on the firewall to protect them.

Apple has yet to comment about the security shortcomings in Leopard.

Leopard, the newest version of OS X, was launched on 26 October and since then Apple claims to have sold or delivered more than two million copies of the software.

But a test of Leopard by Heise Security security expert Jurgen Schmidt found that the firewall in the updated software was set to off and allowed any and every incoming net connection.

Mr Schmidt also found that installing the software as an upgrade to a machine on which the firewall was turned on would lead to this protective software being turned off when that computer was re-started.

He also found that even when the firewall was re-activated it did not let users know about all the potentially vulnerable processes running on that machine.

Commenting for Heise Mike Barwise, editor of the site, said: "This as a serious problem: It provides a false sense of security, which is more dangerous than a lack of actual security that you know about."

Apple has yet to respond to a BBC request for comment on the Heise findings.

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, said: "Year after year, Macs continue to have these potential security problems.

"However, in practice they just don't seem to become real-world problems," he added. "The old wisdom still stands: if you want to avoid viruses and worms, get a Mac."

The Future of Text Messaging… Involves Dead Animals

Don’t know about you, but text messaging is not that easy nor that much fun; dealing with the numbers pad to spell out sentences wastes both time and energy. I was hoping for the iPhone to provide a solution, but it hasn’t, and even if I went with a BlackBerry or something similar, I think I might have a problem; my hands are just to shaky and clumsy for typing on a small device. That’s why the Text-O-Possum seems to be right up my alley!

How it works (I think) is like this: the dead animal projects a virtual keyboard via Bluetooth, which one uses to type with. The text is then sent to a phone (or PDA or even a PC), which then sends along what is written from that device. No need to use the device’s small and often uncomfortable buttons ever again! Instead, use road kill.
