The Only thing Left.....
The Facebook version will differ from the other versions by offering a more "collaborative" gameplay according to the developers. On Facebook, "there will be completely new aspects to it that just haven't been experienced in any other platform," said studio boss Mikael Hed, who confirms that due to the social site's 'collaborative nature', "the pigs will have a more prominent role".
Peter Vesterbacka from Rovio has much grander plans. "We're building an integrated entertainment franchise where merchandising, games, movies, TV, cartoons and comics all come together," said Vesterbacka. This is evident in the expansion of the franchise with a movie tie-in for Angry Birds Rio and an animated series.
Envisioning a franchise along the lines of Disney, with spin-offs in diverse genres that stray from the physics based puzzle design of the original, Vesterbacka elaborates, "Look at how Disney got started. Steamboat Willie created Mickey Mouse, then they added more characters. You can see the same pattern today, but everything is happening much, much faster. Other brands used to build recognition over the course of decades. We've done it in one year."
For those who have just woken up from a coma, Angry Birds is a cross between Pingu and Worms, it is an eclectic blend of the fun elements from those games mated to a simple physics based gameplay. The game requires you to launch the birds in a Kamikaze attack on pigs, who have apparently stolen their eggs, breaking through increasingly convoluted defenses shored up by the pigs. The inherent simplicity and tactical variety offered by game is largely behind its whopping success.
